JACK COTTERILL’S CHESHIRE CATS - October 2011

Jack Cotterill Drums
Jim Swinnerton Bass
Tom Kincaid Piano
James Evans Reeds
Jamie Brownfield Trumpet

This was the youngest band to appear at Pershore JC and they all looked very dapper indeed and we were pleased that James Evans was prepared to come all the way from Kent for the gig bribed by overnight accommodation at Smith Towers. We were also joined by 20 people on an twinning exchange visit from Plouay in France together with some of their host families.

Again I missed the first number the band played but When You’re Smiling, a jazz standard by Louis Armstrong, had a vocal from James and this was followed by It Don’t Mean A Thing with a drum intro from Jack and solos from James and Jim. Creole Love Call , a standard most associated with Duke Ellington and first recorded in 1927, gave us a beautiful clarinet solo and piano solo from Tom. A street beat number was next with The Preacher and this beat was carried all the way through by Jack with front line harmonies from James and Jamie. A lovely tune. It’s Magic with solo from James followed this and then the nimble fingers of Tom with Struttin With Some BBQ. Closing the first session with a vocal from James was Lily of The Valley with bass and clarinet going well together.

We did the raffle in French this month with a young helper making sure my school French was up to scratch and sand happy birthday to Kate.

Numbers played in the next set were I’ve Got Rhythm, Isle of Capri, St Louis Blues, Hindustan a lovely fast number with James playing solo. If I Had You changed the tempo and piano bass and drums were superb. Tom featured with bass and drums next and treated us to C Jam Blues at a cracking pace. Our very own Oscar Peterson! Over The Waves a tune which no-one knew much about was next and followed by Georgia On My Mind which featured piano, trumpet with bass backing and Jack using brushes. There was a lovely ending to this tune. The final number with a drum intro was Tiger Rag and what a way to end a superb session and a most enjoyable evening
