Art Themen & John Hallam

Jan 30, 2019

Art Themen – saxophones
John Hallam – saxophone & clarinet
Rod Kelly – keyboard
Simon Smith – bass
Graham Smith – drums

A great start to our 2019 programme indeed and a very memorable evening of relaxed musical entertainment.

The dynamic duo of Art and John played together and complimented each other as if they played together every day of the week. What was especially good was that they both enjoyed it as much as we did! The repertoire was mixed and included tunes by Ellington, Gershwin, Charlie Parker, Irving Berlin. Several notable numbers were Bernie’s Tune written by Bernie Miller but popularised by Gerry Mulligan and the two saxophones excelled in this; the seasonal tune as John said  Indian Summer was played bossa nova rhythm and Art played a guiro; Lady Be Good and John changed to clarinet had a beautiful solo with Simon on bass and Graham playing snare with his hands; Time’s A Wastin’ tune written by Duke Ellington’s son Mercer; a request tune In A Mellow Tone. There were many more numbers that were equally memorable but the listed ones stood out for me. Take the A Train brought this fabulous session to an end.

It was one of those evenings when you could have continued to listed to more – we will have to organise another.

Thank you to Art, John, Rod, Simon & Graham – it didn’t come better than that.
